This single family home renovation has transformed the standard ‘match-box’ developer home into a bright an airy abode, mirroring the exuberance of the young family who will be occupying it. Located in Mississauga, Canada, the design strategy employed was to tear down the unwanted maze of walls that previously created dark and dingy spaces in order to maximize views into the lush backyard. Program was bifurcated by using elements of interior design, to contain functions without impacting the quality of the spaces created.
The timber framed construction was retro-fitted with steel beams to accommodate the large spans. An existing winding spiral staircase was replaced with a compact straight stair with perforated risers to ensure child safety as well as maintain a line of sight from the front through to the back of the house.
