Dunescape
Dunescape is an interpretive play on the caves and hills that a desert breeze casts out of rock and sand. The project attempts to reconstruct varied opportunities of shelter and repose, which can be found within even the most seemingly treacherous topographies. Visions of desolation that are commonly associated with the desertscape tend to obscure the generous mutability of its form. Our series of dune-forms thus serve an opportunity to notice and reflect on how hospitable spaces emerge from the functional accessibility of windswept surfaces as they layer protectively upon the coolness of shaded crevices.
Subtle scalar variations in the design mimic undulating dunes, all while imbuing the piece with a versatility that can enable many a context of engagement—exhibition, sanctuary, or social interaction. Whilst serving as a moment of interest, the pavilion is thus meant to facilitate huddle discussions, private conversations, animated collaborations, or even a simple moment of recess and reorientation from the rich buzz of the programming at Dubai DesignWeek.
